UTAH PRIDE ANNOUNCES ENTERTAINMENT LINE-UP AT 2006 FESTIVAL AND EVENTS

May 1, 2006 - Salt Lake City, UT – Utah Pride 2006, “Pride, Not Prejudice,” a program of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of Utah (The Center) has announced the entertainment line-up for this year’s Festival and other events.

“One of the main attractions of Utah Pride has always been the upbeat and eclectic program of both local and nationally known performers,” said Jere Keys, coordinator for Utah Pride. “We make every effort to find a variety of entertainment options which will appeal to a wide range of people, while keeping our events family-friendly and positive.”

This year, the Pride Festival will take place on Sunday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Throughout the day, Festival attendees will be treated to live music on the Festival Stage and Celebration Stage, music in the Dance Tent supplied by hot local DJs, and provocative speeches and programming aimed at raising awareness from the Political Stage.

The Festival Stage will play host to acts such as local favorites Salsa Brava and Sister Wives, as well as up-and-coming national or regional names including Levi Kreis, Adrian and the Sickness, John Ashfield Band and Sarah Bettens of K’s Choice. Utah Pride is also pleased to announce that Derek Hartley and Romaine Patterson of the Derek and Romaine show on Sirius Satellite Radio’s OutQ will emcee and entertain from the Festival Stage.

The Celebration Stage focuses more on local and/or acoustic music with artists such as Less Than Never, Kevin Allred, Leraine Horstmanshoff, Chris Bassett, Lindi Wiggins and Jeffery Altergott. This stage will also be the home to acts showcasing that favorite entertainment form within the queer community: drag queens! Representatives from the Royal Court of the Golden Spike Empire, The Imperial Rainbow Court of Northern Utah, and others will lip-sync and dance throughout the day. The Celebration Stage will be emceed by local comedian Alan Walker.

The Dance Tent will provide non-stop music mixed by the hottest local DJs from many of Utah’s favorite queer and queer-friendly nightclubs and bars.

“I couldn’t be happier with the work of our dedicated and hard-working entertainment committee,” said Keys. “They were challenged to do the impossible – find a mix of artists who would appeal across genders, ages, and tastes. But they have risen to the challenge with new ideas and new approaches to programming the Festival.”

The Political Stage will be featuring a number of nationally recognized voices this year. In an effort to expand the dialogue of the Political Stage beyond the typical and expected, this year will feature Shannon Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights; Patrick Guerriero, President of the National Log Cabin Republicans; representative from the Zuna Institute; representative from Lambda Legal; and other radical, diverse and/or controversial speakers. Gearing up for the 2006 election, invitations will be sent to all local candidates to address the Utah Pride audience. The Political Stage will be emceed by Troy Williams of KRCL’s Now Queer This show.

At noon, all the attention of the Festival will turn to the Opening Ceremonies, held at the steps of the City/County Building. The Opening Ceremonies feature musical performances by the Salt Lake Men’s Choir, Ken Wayne, and Katherine Warner; speeches by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Utah Pride Grand Marshal Boyer Jarvis, Senator Scott McCoy and Representative Jacki Biskupski; and a color guard flag-raising ceremony performed by queer veterans of the U.S. armed forces.

Prior to the Festival, Utah Pride is also please to point out that they have secured local musician Luna Picasso to provide entertainment during the Grand Marshal Reception. Also, returning for another year of rowdy and raucous fun, Sexy DJ Claudette will be spinning the music that gets everyone dancing at the Pride Dance held on Saturday, June 3 from 7 p.m to 10 p.m.

But that’s not all! Utah Pride may have a few surprise guests tucked away for safe keeping. Keep an eye on our website, www.utahpride.org, for updates and late-breaking announcements.
