Watched a couple of DVDs from Netflix last night:
Julia: This was kind of rambly and ramshackle -- it had a real sense that the screenplay was nothing more than a few suggestions, and the cast was ad-libbing scenes as the camera rolled. Major characters bounce in and out of the plot, sometimes disappearing never to return. The jarring jumpcuts in the first act felt like a stylistic attempt to present reality as perceived by an alcoholic suffering from blackouts, but after watching the deleted scenes, I realized it was just an attempt by the filmmakers to use fragments of scenes that had been cut, repurposed to serve a plot that was significantly changed. There were three or four threads that could be profitably cut from the film, trimming a half-hour off the overly long 2 hour and 24 minute running time. Not a disaster, and Tilda Swinton is, as always, fascinating to watch. But if you miss this one, your life will be no poorer
Fanboys: I should've liked this better than I did. If you still think "Trek" vs. "Wars" jokes are funny, then this is the movie for you. Kristin Bell was the best actor in the movie by far. Dan Folger was appealing in a cubby way, but the script didn't really challenge him.
BTW, Han Solo IS a bitch...
I've got Soderberg's Che (Part 1 & Part 2) to watch when we get time -- probably tomorrow.
