Jack Vance
Aug. 4th, 2005 08:01 pmSo I come home today and find that FedEx has delivered an enormous, heavy crate of books; 22 hardcovers, in fact; the second half of the Vance Integral Edition of the complete works of the brilliant SF/Fantasy/Mystery writer Jack Vance.
This series of 44 volumes (half of them came out in 2002) would never have existed without the Internet. The project was conceived, planned and executed by a worldwide array of volunteers who painstakingly compared all extant versions of every Vance story and novel, and pieced together a definitive text that was approved by the author and his family. The texts were collected into 44 volumes, elegantly printed and bound in Italy, using a distinctive font developed especially for the project!
It's an astounding project that took well over 5 years to execute. I can't wait to jump back into Vance and read definitive texts of the Dying Earth books... the Demon Princes series... the Lyonesse trilogy...
**SIGH!**
