I got the sixth and final "John Grimes" omnibus by A. Bertram Chandler from the Science Fiction Book Club today, titled John Grimes: Rim Commander. It's an SFBC exclusive; Chandler is otherwise out of print but for the SFBC.

Like the two volumes immediately before it, I get a "thank you" on the copyright page. Several years ago I researched the internal chronology of the stories, and the final four volumes follow my chronology, rather than that printed in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (which has significant inaccuracies.) So there!

You can read more about Chandler and Grimes on my A. Bertram Chandler page.

The cover of the book looks like this.

That is all.

Coolness!

Wow, I haven't thought about Chandler for years -- but when I was a sprat, I remember devouring his stuff when it appeared in the "Ace Double Novel" series. I oughta pull them out and check them again...

Chandler's books reflect a mid-20th century sensibility (they're implicitly racist and wildly sexist) but they're fun.

His novel of a planet without women, Spartan Planet, is offensively homophobic, but also quite funny. If you want to know what a "worldly" straight person in the '60's thought homosexual men were like, give it a read.

Chandler was far more straightforward about sex than was common for SF writers of the era. His characters wanted it, and had quite a lot of it. It wasn't described, except in hazy details, but there was no pretense that what was going on was anything but good old-fashioned fucking.

I dated a Rim Commander once. Funny; he always had bad breath.

Oh my god - you dated him too? ;)

Well, "dated" might be overtating the seriousness of our relationship. "Been done by" is probably more accurate...
