I regularly read Andrew Sullivan's blog. I'm not by any means a Republican or a conservative -- but no longer is Sullivan, at least not in the same way they define "Conservative" in Glennbeckistan.

Sullivan posted this letter from a reader today. Read it.

I think Sullivan's reader covers every point that I considered when I read the shocking announcement on Wednesday that the LDS Church had issued a statement in favor of ordinances to outlaw discrimination against LGBT people in employment and housing. The measures passed unanimously when voted upon by the Salt Lake City Council the evening the church's statement was read.

Does this movement towards equality absolve the Mormons of guilt regarding their past acts of aggression towards the LGBT community? Of course not. But is this a tangible win for the Utah LGBT community? Without a doubt.

LGBT Utah can rightfully celebrate this victory, even as we lay plans to expand upon it.

Wow. That IS shocking. I hadn't heard anything about it. It seems like a very abrupt turnabout in a short time. I'm skeptical. I don't think it's time to ease up on the magic underwear jokes just yet.
