Last Thursday, the postman delivered my signed/limited edition Subterranean Press copy (#155 of 474) of Tim Powers's new novel, Three Days to Never. It's only been 6 YEARS since his last novel, Declare came out, so I was really looking forward to this one.

Surprisingly, I've only read 78 pages so far. But it was a very busy weekend, and I had a ton o' shit going on. I'm planning on retiring to the bedroom in a few and see if I can get another couple chapters read before I go to bed.

Tim Powers is, IMHO, the best fantasy writer working in the English language (Garcia Marquez may be a better fantasy writer than Powers, but only just barely.) I'm impressed with the early chapters. I'll post more about it when I've finished the book.

You a fantasy lover as well? Any particular titles you reccommend?

I haven't had much time to read this summer, but hopefully I'll get to finish
the Earthsea trilogy (never read them, a friend reccomended it to me), The Wayfarer Redemption (reading it right now) and His Dark Materials trilogy

I love Powers! I hadn't heard about Declare. I'll have to snag a copy from someplace. Thanks for the heads-up!

Declare is Tim's best book since his masterpiece, Last Call. I re-read Declare about once a year, and every time it blows the back of my head off. I've probably given away a dozen copies. If you like Powers, you should love Declare.

I read "A Wizard of Earthsea" in the 5th or 6th grade, when it first came out (yes, I'm that old...) I'm a big fan of LeGuin. The "Earthsea" trilogy now comprises 6 or 7 books.

I have "His Dark Materials," but I've never gotten around to reading it.

I hardly have any time to read any more. I used to read 2 or 3 books at a time, and finish 6-7 books a month. Now I'm lucky if I read a dozen books a year. And most of what I read are Star Trek novels, they're my literary equivalent of "comfort food." **SIGH!**

There's six books in the Earthsea trilogy? Wow... all this time I thought there was just three.

And You haven't read His Dark Materials? Get to it! They're marketed as teen fiction, but they're so much more engrossing and philosophical compared to the churn I see on the shelves today. As result of reading the final book, my philosophies about death and the afterlife changed dramatically.
